CHARITÉ | FEAR & STRESS RESPONSE EXPLAINER
style-video.com created a 2D animated mental health explainer video for Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin, a leading German university medical center. The animation explains how fear affects the human body, introduces the fight, flight and freeze responses, and explores how previous stressful experiences can influence our reactions to everyday situations.

About the Client
Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin is a German university medical center combining clinical care, medical research and education.
Its activities include psychiatry, psychotherapy and mental health education, including psychoeducational resources available to Ukrainian-speaking audiences.
The Communication Challenge
Fear is a natural human response to danger, but the physical and psychological processes behind it can be difficult to understand.
Many people are unfamiliar with the automatic changes that occur in the body during stressful situations or why seemingly ordinary events can trigger strong emotional reactions.
The challenge was to explain these processes through accessible animation, combining basic physiology with a relatable human story.
Our Creative Solution
We structured the animated explainer around two complementary elements: an educational explanation of the body's fear response and an everyday situation illustrating how previous experiences can influence emotions.
Visualizing the Body's Response to Fear
The video begins by explaining how the body reacts to perceived danger. Using a snake as a familiar example of a possible threat, the narration introduces the physiological stress response.
The animation explains several changes that may occur when the body prepares to respond:
- Pupils dilate, helping the eyes take in more light.
- Heart rate increases to support the body's response to stress.
- Airways expand to support increased oxygen intake.
- Muscles become more alert and prepared for movement.
- Sweating helps regulate body temperature.
- Digestive activity slows as the body prioritizes its immediate response.
Fight, Flight and Freeze
The explainer then introduces three common defensive responses to perceived danger: fight, flight and freeze.
These responses illustrate different ways the nervous system may react to a threatening situation, including confrontation, escape or temporary immobility.
A Real-Life Example: Hanna and Her Son
To connect the educational information with everyday experience, the animation follows Hanna and her six-year-old son Andrii as they walk home one evening.
An ambulance drives past with its siren sounding. For Hanna, the sound brings back memories of air raid alerts in her hometown and the time she spent sheltering with her son.
Hanna's heart begins to race. She notices that Andrii is holding her hand more tightly and appears frightened.
Meanwhile, other people nearby continue their conversations without reacting strongly to the ambulance.
This contrast illustrates an important psychological concept: people can interpret the same situation differently depending on their previous experiences.
The example helps explain how familiar sounds or situations may evoke memories associated with past danger, even when the present circumstances are different.
Explaining Mental Health Through Animation
The video combines physiological explanations with character-driven storytelling to make psychological concepts accessible to a non-specialist audience.
It presents fear as a natural protective response while also explaining why heightened reactions may sometimes continue after the original danger has passed.
The educational narrative encourages viewers to understand their emotional responses and recognize the influence of previous stressful experiences.
Project Outcome
The completed Ukrainian-language animation provides Charité with an educational explanation of fear, physiological stress responses and the relationship between past experiences and present emotions.
This project demonstrates style-video.com's experience in mental health animation, psychological education videos, healthcare explainer production and character-driven storytelling for medical institutions.
