About the Client
Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin is a German university medical center combining medical research, clinical care and education.
Its activities include psychiatry, psychotherapy and mental health education, with psychological support resources available to Ukrainian-speaking audiences.
The Communication Challenge
Grief is a complex emotional response that can arise after losing someone or something important, including relationships, familiar surroundings and a sense of home.
Explaining grief requires sensitivity. Psychological concepts must be presented clearly without minimizing personal experiences or suggesting that everyone responds to loss in the same way.
The challenge was to communicate the emotional and physical aspects of sadness through accessible animation while illustrating how displacement and memories of home can influence everyday life.
Our Creative Solution
We combined psychoeducational storytelling with a relatable family narrative to explain the experience of grief.
The video introduces common emotional and physical responses to loss, including tiredness, withdrawal, changes in motivation and feelings of sadness or uncertainty.
It also presents a familiar five-stage model of grief: denial, anger, bargaining, despair and acceptance. These are introduced as possible emotional experiences rather than a fixed sequence that everyone must follow.
A Personal Story: Hanna and Andrii
The central story follows Hanna and her six-year-old son Andrii, who have been forced to leave their home because of the war.
One evening, they return to their temporary accommodation for displaced families. Hanna remembers their family home near a river, the village where everyone knew one another and her grandmother, who once lived in the same house.
Uncertainty about whether they will ever return to that home leaves Hanna feeling deeply sad.
Later, Andrii asks his mother to make potato pancakes, just as his grandmother Halya used to prepare them. Hanna agrees.
That evening, the familiar smell of the food brings back warm memories of home. For a moment, both mother and son feel connected to the life they remember.
Hanna's sadness has not disappeared, but the shared experience offers comfort and a reminder of their family connection.
Explaining Grief Through Character Animation
The family story gives emotional context to the psychological concepts introduced earlier in the video.
Rather than presenting grief only through definitions, the animation shows how loss can affect everyday thoughts, feelings and family interactions.
The narrative also highlights the importance of familiar memories, emotional connection and allowing space for sadness.
By combining educational information with character-driven storytelling, the video makes a sensitive psychological topic more understandable to a non-specialist audience.
Project Outcome
The completed Ukrainian-language explainer presents grief and emotional responses to loss through an accessible educational narrative.
It combines psychological concepts with a family story about displacement, memories of home and emotional support.
